Parental involvement is a combination of commitment and active participation on the part of parent to the school and to the student. As parents you can ensure that your child receives the benefits from parental involvement by staying up to date on what is happening in the classroom.
Tulsa Public Schools is committed to helping your child develop the academic knowledge and critical thinking he or she needs to succeed in school and beyond. As a result, these involvement opportunities empower parents to take action. By connecting parents to school officials, community members, other parents, knowledge, and powerful allies, these opportunities build bridges and networks that support schools and sustain whole communities.

EAST CENTRAL JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL PARENT AND FAMILY ENGAGEMENT POLICY
Tulsa Public Schools shall promote parent engagement in all schools as mandated by Title I, Section 1116 of the Every Student Succeeds Act of 2015 (ESSA), and work as equal partners with parents in providing quality learning experiences for every student, every day, without exception.
The Board believes and acknowledges that parent engagement raises the academic achievement level of students. Additionally, parents become empowered, teacher morale improves and communities grow stronger when parents take an active role in educating their children. To this end, schools shall involve parents in the education of their children at all grade levels. The Superintendent or his/her designee shall provide coordination, technical assistance and other support necessary to assist all schools in planning and implementing effective parent and family engagement activities to improve student academic achievement and school performance. Section 1116 of the Every Student Succeeds Act of 2015 (ESSA)-Title I Parent Engagement establishes that to build the capacity for parent engagement within schools, a district is to “develop jointly with, agree with, and distribute to parents of participating children a written Parent Engagement Policy”.
Building Parents Capacity for Involvement
The Board believes in empowering parents to insist on improvements, giving schools extra incentives, and giving parents more options regarding their child’s education. As a result of this belief, the Board shall create an environment of supportive and collaborative parent engagement through the following means:
1. Program Information for Parents and Family Members:
East Central Junior High School shall provide assistance to parents and family members of all children in understanding such topics as the state’s academic content and achievement standards, the assessments being used, the requirements and rights of Title 1, Section 1116 of the Every Student Succeeds Act of 2015 (ESSA) and how to monitor their children’s progress and work with educators to improve their achievement.
East Central Junior High utilizes various accountability measures to ensure that the needs of our students are being met. Parents, students, and teachers will sign an “Accountability Agreement” during the fall of each school year that outlines the responsibilities each holds in the education of the student. Students and parents will receive written notification to access the Code of Conduct, Dress Code, and Attendance Polices at the beginning of each school year to make parents and students aware of acceptable behavior and the consequences of violating these expectations. Progress reports and/or report cards will be sent to parents to monitor their child’s progress. Parents will also be able to access their progress online anytime through the school’s PowerSchool system.
East Central Junior High is committed to keeping parents informed of its activities. School newsletters, School Connect telephone messaging system, social media, our school website, and the school marquee are used to inform parents of East Central Junior High school events, meetings, and other important information in English and Spanish. In addition, school messages are sent using the School way app as well as the utilization of social media platforms such as Twitter and Facebook.
4. Materials and Training:
East Central Junior High will provide materials and training, such as technology literacy, to help parents work with their children to improve academic achievement. During enrollment ECJH will provide parents with all pertinent information and e-mail access. “School Connect and school way” will be utilized to inform parents when progress reports and report cards will be issued. Parents and teachers can use Power School online to monitor assignments and homework. East Central Junior High will also provide instructions on how to access Power School to check grades and attendance.East Central Junior High will maintain a Parent Resource Center to help parents to participate in the education of their children. The Parent Resource Center will house a collection of parenting books and community resource information to provide parents with the tools necessary to help develop successful students.
5. Educational Opportunities:
East Central Junior High will provide professional development opportunities to faculty and staff in order to strengthen and enhance the “teacher/parent” relationship. Additionally, strategies and techniques will be offered to parents so they can assist their children with learning activities that extend and enrich the school’s instructional programs. Finally, we plan to engage our community through home visits and parent workshops.
6. Active Parents:
In many ways, parents are the most important teachers children will ever have. Studies prove that when parents are actively involved in their child’s education, students perform better academically, are more likely to continue their education after high school, are more disciplined, and communicate better with their parents. At East Central Junior High parents are encouraged to participate in school activities such as Meet the Teachers Night, Back to School Community Dinner Info. Night, Parent/Teacher Conferences, Oklahoma Promise Night, Talent Show, Art Show, and volunteer with athletics and student organizations. Parents will have additional opportunities to get involved and take an active part in helping their child’s teacher by volunteering. The E.C.J.H.S Parent and Community Advisory Council (PCAC) was created to advise the school on ways to improve student achievement. The PCAC meets three times during the school year to provide feedback and support to parents, faculty and administration. This is accomplished through activities that enhance the student’s education, improve communication and create an environment that is beneficial to achieve higher student success.
7. Informational Meetings:
In order to promote positive and meaningful interaction between parents and staff, East Central Junior High will hold meetings throughout the school year at flexible and convenient times for parents. These meetings include, but are not limited to, Back to School Community Dinner Night, Parent-Teacher Conferences, Pickup Schedule, 7th grade Orientation, and educational workshops.
8. Other Requested Activities:
East Central Junior High will develop relationships with community organizations and businesses in order to support our parental engagement activities. We will also provide additional and reasonable services at the parent’s request. In following the Tulsa Model, East Central Junior High takes great pride in building and maintaining community support with parents and members of our community which is evidenced by our partnership with A New Way, Dayspring Community Services, Morton, COPES, Palmer and The Tulsa Food Bank. These partnerships will be established to better serve our students and families as we continue to build relationships with our community stakeholders.
DEFINITION OF PARENT ENGAGEMENT
Parent engagement is the support and participation of parents at home, in the community, and at the school site that directly and positively affect the educational performance offered to all students.
Parent engagement is most successful when it is viewed, practiced, and promoted as a partnership between home and school.
The Administration, faculty, and staff of East Central Junior High believe that parental engagement is an invaluable key to help our students succeed in school and life.
